The Cross of Saint James is a red Latin cross resembling a sword, with fleurs-de-lis at the ends and a heraldic hilt. Its shape is said to have originated during the Crusades, when knights carried small crosses with sharpened ends to plant in the ground for their daily devotions.
The three fleurs-de-lis represent immaculate honor, alluding to the Apostle's morality.
The sword represents the chivalric nature of Saint James and his martyrdom, as he was beheaded. It can also symbolize, in a certain sense, wielding the sword in the name of Christ. Specifically, it has been the emblem since the 12th century of the Order of Santiago, named after the patron saint of Spain, Saint James the Greater. This design is also known as the Cross of the Knights of Santiago, as they wore the cross on their banner and white cloak.
