The Roman cingulum militare was a leather belt adorned with decorative metal plates and often equipped with holders or suspension devices for the soldier's dagger. This war belt not only served to hold the warrior's braccae (breeches) during battle, but was also a symbol of rank or military honor. The cingulum often included a leather apron composed of several flat, narrow strips (called pterygia or pteruges) suspended from the belt and decorated with continuous rows of riveted metal fittings. Each strip was finished with metal pendants (pensilia).

The richly decorated Roman cingulum or balteus belt we offer here is ideal for representing a late 1st-century legionary. The rectangular riveted decorative plates (approximately 8.5 x 5 cm) are made of thin brass, and are embossed, alternating with the motif of a human face and the famous motif of the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, or Lupa Romana. In Roman mythology, the twins are considered the founders of the city of Rome. The hinged buckle and movable pugio fasteners are also made of brass. The belt is made of sturdy 3 mm thick leather. The strap is pre-cut and adjustable to various sizes. A leather cord is included for attaching a dagger to the button-shaped pugio fasteners. The striped apron consists of four leather straps, each strap adorned with a pendant and eight brass medallions.
