Houndskull Bascinet - Bascinet battle-ready

This reproduction is based on a Houndskull Bascinet made in Milan around 1390 a.d. It is part of the armour from Churburg, Tyrol. Reconstruction of a late medieval bascinet of the 14th Century with folding Klappvisor and was usually worn together with a mail curtain ("camail" or aventail), was usually attached to the lower edge of the helmet to protect the throat, neck and shoulders.

The first reference to a bascinet, was in the Italian city of Padua in 1281, being worn by infantry. It is believed that the bascinet evolved from the cervelliere, which was worn with a mail coif, as either the sole form of head protection or beneath a great helm. 

It is the visor which gives the helmet its name, as this resembles the face of a dog ("hound" or, in German, "Hund"), with a protruding muzzle in order to better protect the face from blows and to grant greater ventilation

A comfortable, adjustable, and padded liner is riveted into the helmet, as well as a leather chin-strap with a stell buckle.
