Roman phalerae, made of tin-plated brass

The phalerae have their origins in metal decorative plates, which served as prizes and awards in sporting competitions or as gifts. Later they were used in the Roman legions for honors, comparable to a medal or an award for bravery. The phalerae were awarded to individual soldiers as well as entire units or troops. When phalerae were awarded to entire units, they were attached to the respective standard.

The phalerae offered here are, comparable to the originals, attached to a leather strap frame, which is put on like a vest and closed on the back with straps and buckles. At the level of the collarbones there are thin straps to which a red wool scarf, the focale, is tied. Two tin-plated torques, also badges of honor, are hooked into the lower loops of the focale.
